I have followed your instructions however I have not yet hit the reset button. The pages says that if I do reset, I will disable toolbars and add-ons, will loose my default web browser settings, privacy settings and security settings. Also I am concerned that I will loose all of my pages that I have bookmarked. Should I be concerned about any of these.

Thanks,

Richard

Hello,

correct is that the Internet Explorer will delete temporary files, cokkies and disable Add-Ons. It will also delete all manual privacy and browser settings. Your Bookmarks will not be deleted. If you are unsure you can backup your favourite sites. They are stored in C:\Users\YourName\Favourites. Just copy and paste this folder to another folder. So you have a backup from your favourites.

Add-Ons are the most reason why the Internet Explorer does not work anymore.

After setting back the Interent Explorer to his defaults you lost also Add-Ons like Java or Adobe Flash. At the first start of the Internet Explorer after setting back it will perhaps ask you for activating Java or Flash. You kan do this. But do not activate any toolbars. Normally you don´t need them. If you really need a special toolbar reinstall.

If Adobe Flash does not work anymore after reset you can install ist again through open the manufacturer´s website.

www.adobe.com

Scroll down and on the right side you see Adobe Flash. Click on it and follow the instructions. Please be sure to not install other products like a Security Scan which are sometime sincluded in these downloads.
Sorry for getting one german answer yesterday. The website sent this questions to the german justanswer page. And all automatically sent answers are in german.

I am not sure that my last response got to you but if not here it is again. I followed your instructions but the reset failed. A window opened and showed that the category "resetting user customizations" had a red x in front of it. The other two categories had green arrows in front of them.

Then please close Internet Exploer and open Open Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Internet Options.
Above click on "Programs" and the use the button MANAGE ADD-ONS.

Choose "ALL ADD-ONS"

Then click on the right side you can click the Add-Ons. Disable every Add-On but no Microsoft Add-Ons and not Adobe Flash and Java Add-Ons. Try then if the Internet Explorer Works.

I have done as you suggested however most non-Microsoft, Adobe and Java add-ons are already disabled. There is one Microsoft add-on (Microsoft Research) and two Java add-ons (Java Plug-In SSV helper and Java Plug-In 2 SSV helper) that are presently disabled. Should they be enabled.

Richard

That is OK. Does the Internet Explorer works now?
Otherwise please try once to disable Date Execution Prevention:

Internet explorer still does not work. I have gone to the web site you suggested to disable Data Execution Prevention however following is the warning that is posted there,

"Do not disable DEP, or exclude (OptOut) a program, unless you have adequate protection and are having problems only with a known safe program that DEP will not let run and you cannot live without it. Remember DEP stopped the program for a reason. Either it is just a improperly running program, or some sort of malware trying to get into restricted memory.

Adequate Protection:

  • Antivirus program with realtime scanning (EX: Avast or AVG are good ones)

  • A spyware/adware program with realtime scanning (EX: Windows Defender, Spybot Search and Destroy)

  • Enable Vista's UAC (User Account Control). It asks you for permission first for anything that wants to run with full access to the computer."

Is is OK to disable DEP and if so, will my computer be at risk from what.I do not even know what program that DEP is objecting to. Any ideas at to what it might be.

Richard
