My father was diagnosed with Alzheimer Disease two years ago

Beantwortete Frage:

My father was diagnosed with Alzheimer Disease two years ago and he was 63 at that time. However his forgetfullness, moodyness had been going on more than 1-2 year. According to the doctor, he is having Early Onset Alzheimer Disease. I did a bit of reading, browsing and found that this type of Alzheimer is genetic related. Is it true? I also read there is a test to find if you have carried the gene/chromosome. What kind of test is it? If I have a carried gene, will I have Alzheimer soon? Please help and advise. Thanks.

It is true that Alzheimer is more often in families where there were such patients before.
But that does not mean, that you will surely have Alzheimer. Up to now there are no hard facts about the incidence in families, the potential risk or similar.
And ther no reliabel tests that can tell you how hiogh your risk is.
Every day there are news about what might predict, might guide to and so on, but until now there is nothing for sure. I guess any result who make you more nervous, so I don´t advise such tests.
Sure is that good food, normal weight, enough sports (outdoor), a lot of thinking (mental work), different mental jobs, working with hands, making music, things that make a life interesting and healthy, reduce the risk of getting Alzheimer.
So if you have any risks like Diabetes, high blood pressure, too much weight, etc - try to reduce or eliminate them. Care about your body and soul.

Hallo Dr. Schaaf,

Thank you for your answer.

Yes, I have read but confuse because seems for this case looks there is nothing I can do, esp. if I want to get married and wonder what will happened I'm havng kids, etc.

What does it mean :

" there is no reliabel tests that can tell you how hiogh your risk"

Does it mean the tests are not 100% right?

I´m involved in a magazine about Alzheimer´s and for every copy there are reports of new methods that MIGHT be able to predict the risk of... But none of these tests is yet good and reliable enough to be recommended. The situation for "predictive factors" is similar. As you have read, the risk in families where Alzheimer is known, is higher for children. But statistics also show that it is higher for partners!
My intention was to tell you what is really known in the prevention of dementia and to recommend you not to care too much about tests that are written about somewhere because it won´t help you but it probably will make you worried WITHOUT sufficient scientific basis.
Hope my english is good enough to explain what I mean.

Best regards
